PREPOSITIONS OF TIME

1. Порівняйat, on, in/ Сравни at, on, in

 

They came at 5 o’clock. – Вони прийшли в 5 годин. / Они пришли в 5 часов.

They came on Friday. – Вони прийшли в п’ятницю. / Они пришли в пятницу.

They came in October. – Вони приїхали в жовтні. / Они приехали в октябре.

They came in 1968. – Вони приїхали в 1968 році. / Они приехали в 1968 году.

 

 

 

2. Ми використовуємоatдля позначення часу доби /

Мы используем at для обозначения времени суток:

 

at five o’clock – о 5:00 / в о 5:00

at 11.45 – в 11.45 / в  11.45

at midnight – опівночі / в полночь

at lunchtime – в обідню перерву / в обеденный перерыв

at sunset   etc. – на захід сонця  / на закате

 

 

 

3. Ми використовуємоonдля позначення днів та дат /

Мы используем on для обозначения дней и дат:

 

on Friday – в п’ятницю / в пятницу

on Fridays – по п’ятницях / по пятницам

on 16 May 1999 – 16 травня 1999 / 16 мая 1999

on Christmas Day – на Різдво / на Рождество

on my birthday – в мій день народження / в мой день рождения

 

 

 

4. Ми використовуємо inдля позначення місяців, років, сезонів /

Мы используем in для обозначения месяцев, лет, сезонов:

 

 

in October – в жовтні /в октябре

in 1988 – в 1988 році / в 1988 году

in the 18th century – в 18 столітті / в 18 веке

in the past – в минулому / в прошлом

in (the) winter – взимку / зимой

in the 1990s – в 1990-х / в 1990-х

in the Middle Ages – в середні століття / в средние века

in (the) future – в майбутньому / в будущем

 

 

 

5. Ми використовуємоatв цих висловах / Мы используем at в этих выражениях:

 

at night – в нічний час / в ночное время

at the weekend (at weekends) – у вихідні (у вихідні дні) / в выходные (в выходные дни)

at Christmas – на Різдво / на Рождество

at the moment (at present) – на даний момент (в даний час) /  на данный момент (в настоящее время)

at the same time – в той же час / в то же время

in the morning(s) – вранці (по ранках) / утром (по утрам)

7. Ми не використовуємо at / on / inпередlast / next / this / every /

Мы не используем at / on / in перед last /next / this /every:

 

I’ll see you next Friday.  (not on next Friday) – Побачимося в наступну п’ятницю.

They got married last March. (not in last Friday) – Вони одружилися в березні минулого року.

She used this mincer last week. – Вона використовувала цю м’ясорубку  минулого тижня.

 

 

 

In spoken English we often leave out on before days (Sunday/Monday etc.).

I’ll see you on Friday, or I’ll see you Friday.

I don’t go out on Monday mornings, or I don’t go out Monday mornings.

 

 

In a few minutes / in six months etc.

The train will be leaving in a few minutes.  (= a few minutes from now)

Andy has gone away. He’ll be back in a week.  (= a week from now)

She’ll be here in a moment.  (= a moment from now)

 

 

You can also say ‘in six months’ time”, ‘in a week’s time’ etc.:

They’re getting married in six months’ time,    or    … in six months.

 

 

We also use in … to say how long it takes to do something:

I learnt to drive in four weeks.  (= it took me four weeks to learn)
