• a hard (difficult) task/question/choice — трудная задача/вопрос/выбор;
• a person difficult (hard) to deal with — человек, с которым трудно/тяжело иметь дело.

В словосочетаниях тяжелые времена, тяжелая жизнь используется слово hard:

• Those were hard times for him. – Это были тяжелые времена для него.
• He had a hard life. – У него была тяжелая жизнь.

 

Если под словом тяжелый подразумевается вес предмета, тогда его нужно перевести как heavy:

• a heavy box — тяжелый ящик;
• a heavy suitcase — тяжелый чемодан.

Слово heavy может употребляться и в переносном смысле:

• heavy features — тяжелые черты лица;
• a heavy meal — тяжелая пища.

Не удивляйтесь, встретив словосочетания heavy traffic или heavy rain / snow. Имеется в виду сильное движение, сильный дождь/снег.
