My favourite picture

This picture is a masterpiece of a famous Russian painter Ilya Repin. Ilya Yefimovich Repin was born on 29 September, 1930. He was a Russian realist painter. He was the most renowned Russian artist of the 19th century. He played a major role in bringing Russian art into the mainstream of European culture. His well-known works include Barge Haulers on the Volga (1873), Religious Procession in Kursk Province (1883) and Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks (1880–91).

To begin with,  it is painted in the style of realism. It shows us the real life of Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks. It is based on the historical event, when Cossacks were writing a letter to the Turkish Sultan.

In the foreground there are some Cossack atamans. Among them there is Ivan Sirko and his true warriors. There is a writer, who is noting their words.

What is more, in the top corner we can see our two Ukrainian flags. One of them is a national flag of Ukraine. In the background there are simple Cossacks, who are doing their everyday chores. The colours of the picture are bright and optimistic.

I think, we can’t but admire the courage and merry characters of our forefathers.
